Series 4
Series 4 represents a new concept in high precision, research grade, reference method gas analyzers. This concept is a total departure from traditional designs of gas analyzers and is a new opportunity to allow these types of instruments to open up to the whole world of connectivity, whether that is wireless operation, Bluetooth, 3G, 4G, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), satellite communications, or any future systems. This allows a user to access analyzer measurements & instrument diagnostic data from anywhere in the world.

The Signal Group has designed a state-of-the-art electronics platform that offers a color touch-screen user interface, flash memory logging, and the latest communications facility for gas analysis. It’s called Series 4. This new design has an architecture which provides a single CPU microprocessor to manage 1 to 5 detector signals plus proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controllers for an array of digital flow controllers and temperature controllers, Inter-Integrated Circuit (I˛C) for internal I/O modules, user-programmable contact closures, and various user interfaces - including a front-panel GUI display and/or a remote-control facilities.

The imbedded CPU uses Signal’s proprietary operating system (written in C++), so there’s no overhead in platforms such as Windows or LabVIEW. The system provides 20Hz detector sampling frequency and an industry leading speed of response. Given that the software was developed in-house for a single CPU affords enormous cost savings in hardware. Whereas earlier platforms required a CPU for each detector, plus peripheral electronics for other required functionality, this platform uses a single CPU for everything needed for 5 gas detectors including flow controllers and temperature controllers.

A 5th-order-polynomial linearity routine and 24-bit analog-to-digital converter provide a 10,000:1 linearity accurate to within 1% of reading. This, for example, can provide a CO analyzer with a range of 1% resolvable to 1ppm on a single range.

Analytical ranges are all user-configurable. With 10,000:1 available on a single range, a user may calibrate anywhere within this range on a single calibration gas. If, however, he wishes to configure sub-ranges within this full scale, he may also configure contact closures to allow selection of specific calibration gasses to suit his chosen ranges. For example, with ranges of 1kppm, 1kppm, 100ppm, and 10ppm the instrument can automatically calibrate with 8kppm, 800ppm, 80ppm and 8ppm gases via external valves. (This facility is required by some regulatory procedures for calibration audits.)

The development of this fourth-generation platform was the largest design project ever undertaken by Signal, took several years, and was partially funded by the UK government's Technology Strategy Board, specifically for a new CO2 analyzer for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Analyzers can be provided with or without a front panel user graphical user interface (GUI). If supplied, the GUI includes USB and Secure Digital (SD) card. The GUI software is written in Windows CE and is independent of the analyzer operating system. GUI features include those shown adjacent.

Analyzers supplied without the GUI are provided with a blank front panel and an Ethernet connection which allows users to remotely operate the unit via a PC. This software is called S4i and is offered free of charge with each analyzer. It allows complete access to every parameter within the unit’s CPU. Not only do you get the normal analyzer readings and remote control, S4i gives advanced functionality such as comprehensive diagnostics (temperatures, pressures, errors, etc), data logging, calculations, linearity audits, chart traces, automatic calibration, user-configurable contact-closure alarms, and (for Solar-class instruments) automatic FID fuel/air optimization routines.
S4i includes every aspect of instrument functionality so that our service department can access (via the Internet) any remote site to check or set any parameter necessary to give service support anywhere in the world. For systems integrators, this design provides the individual characterization of the gas analyzer to be within the body of the unit. This, together with the remote Ethernet communications and the deletion of the front panel GUI, allows the use of a stand-alone systems bench computer to center on the major aspects of the overall operation without the need to get into the "nitty gritty" of the gas analyzer unit. For systems integrators, this Visual Basic software is offered as Open Source to allow them to adapt it to their house software running systems.
Series 4 is currently offered with the following classes of measurement techniques.
  • Aurora class provides paramagnetic (PMG) measurement of oxygen (O2). (Legacy Series III Model 8000M remains available for current customers.)
  • Pulsar class provides gas filter correlation nondispersive infrared (GFC-NDIR) measurement (an order of magnitude more accurate than the previous generation of instruments) of CO, CO2, NO, SO2, N2O, CH4, and other infrared-absorbing gases. (Legacy Series III Models 7000M/7000FM and 9000MGA remain available for current customers.)
  • Quasar class provides chemiluminescent (CLD) measurement of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). (Legacy Series III Model 4000VM remains available for current customers.)
  • Solar class provides flame ionization (FID) measurement of Methane (CH4), Non-Methane (NMHC) & Total (THC) Hydrocarbons, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). (Portable Model 3010 MiniFID is also available for THC measurement; legacy Series III Models 3000MO (CH4-only) and 3000HM (THC) remain available for current customers.)
Any of the classes can be combined in one instrument package; for example, a paramagnetic oxygen detector can be added to a twin dual-bench GFC-NDIR Pulsar instrument to provide 5 gas measurements in one package, ideal for continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS), automotive engine emissions, or research.
